DURHAM, N.C. -- Strong play highlighted day one of the Kitty Harrison Invitational for the Duke women's tennis team, as the Blue Devils combined to go 5-0 in singles action and 4-2 in doubles at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center in Durham, N.C.
Duke opened the invitational by facing two Texas duos and a VCU pair in doubles play. The Duke tandem of sophomore Samantha Harris and freshman Kaitlyn McCarthy defeated Neda Korpcina and Lana Groenvynck of Texas, 8-2, while junior Alyssa Smith and sophomore Rebecca Smaller defeated VCU's Anna Rasmussen and Sofia Segerfors, 8-5. Senior Beatrice Capra and freshman Ellyse Hamlin were unable to defeat their opponent in Texas' team of Breaunna Addison and Dani Wagland, falling 8-4.
In the team's second set of doubles matches, Duke faced off against the Cavaliers of Virginia. Capra and Harris teamed together for the first time this season and defeated Skylar Morton and Meghan Kelley, 8-6. The Duke pair of freshman Jessica Ho and junior Chalena Scholl suffered just its second loss of the fall after dropping its contest to Maci Epstein and Victoria Olivarez, 8-5. McCarthy and Smith rounded out the Duke doubles teams competing in the first day of the Kitty Harrison Invitational, dropping Stephanie Nauta and Erica Susi, 8-6.
The Blue Devils closed day one with a perfect mark in singles. Smith cruised in her contest against Michigan's Kara Hall, 6-2, 6-1, moving her record to 3-3 on the season, while Smaller earned her second singles win of the fall with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Segerfors. On court two, Scholl outlasted Kate Fahey of Michigan in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4, improving her ledger to 3-2. McCarthy remained consistent in her singles play this fall campaign, downing Brienne Minor of Michigan, 6-4, 6-3. Ho closed out the first day of competition for the Blue Devils with an impressive, three-set, 6-1, 6-7, 6-3, win against Michigan's Mira Ruder-Hook.
Duke resumes competition Saturday at 10 a.m., facing Penn State in doubles action.
All Duke matches are slated to be played in the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. Admission to the event is free to the public. Free parking for Saturday's matches is available to the public along Whitford Drive and Frank Bassett Drive Saturday, beginning at 8 a.m. Parking for spectators attending the event Sunday is available in the Blue Zone lot, with gates opening at 9 a.m.
