DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke women's tennis team maintained its winning ways Saturday during day two of the Kitty Harrison Invitational in Durham, N.C., as the Blue Devils registered a 5-1 singles mark against opposition from LSU and a 2-1 record versus Penn State doubles tandems. Duke has combined to go 10-1 in singles and 6-3 in doubles over the first two days of the three-day event.
Duke opened Saturday's competition with the final doubles contests of the invitational. The pair of juniors Chalena Scholl and Alyssa Smith, competing together for the first time this fall, outlasted Penn State's duo of Jacqueline Zuhse and Katherine Whiteaway, 7-5, while sophomore Rebecca Smaller and freshman Jessica Ho convincingly defeated Penn State's Katia Blik and Kelly Mengel, 6-2. Duke was unable to head into singles play with a doubles sweep however, as the Duke team of sophomore Samantha Harris and freshman Kaitlyn McCarthy suffered a 6-3 defeat to Devan McCluskey and Kimberly-Ann Surin. The setback is the first of the season for Harris and McCarthy.
The Blue Devils returned to the courts later in the day to face off against LSU in singles play. McCarthy continued to cruise this fall for Duke, defeating her opponent, Ella Taylor, in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. The Cary, N.C., native moved to 9-1 on the year with Saturday's result. Harris played as efficiently as McCarthy in her match against Skylar Kuykendall, downing the Tiger, 6-1, 6-3. Harris moved to 2-0 on the fall with the win. Smaller carried her momentum over from yesterday's singles win with her second consecutive victory after dropping Skylar Holloway, 6-4, 7-5. Smith jumped out to an early lead over her opponent, Ryann Foster, and held off a late charge in the second set to earn a 6-0, 7-6 win. Senior Beatrice Capra, taking the singles court for the first time this weekend, battled back from an early first-set deficit to take her match against Jessica Golovin, 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-8). Scholl fell to Abby Owens, 7-5, 6-3, to round out the Blue Devils' singles action.
The final day of the Kitty Harrison Invitational begins Sunday at 10 a.m., with Duke facing South Carolina in singles action. Duke's matches are slated to be played in the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. Admission to the event is free to the public.
