DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke women's tennis team concluded the three-day Kitty Harrison Invitational Sunday morning with its third straight day of stellar singles play, as the Blue Devils posted a 5-1 mark against opposition from South Carolina and Penn State to move the team's overall singles record to 15-2 during the invitational.
Freshman Kaitlyn McCarthy remained unbeaten on the weekend after closing the Kitty Harrison Invitational with an impressive 6-0, 6-2 victory over Hannah Templeton. The victory moved the Cary, N.C., native's overall record to 10-1 on the season, making her the first Blue Devil to reach double-digit wins in singles action this fall. Junior Chalena Scholl dropped just two games as well in her two-set win over Ellie Zogg, as the Pompano Beach, Fla., native registered a 6-1, 6-1 result. For junior Alyssa Smith, the momentum from a 7-6 first set carried over into the second as she downed Alison Mills, 7-6, 6-3. Sophomore Rebecca Smaller pulled her fall record even to 4-4 after securing her third straight singles win of the weekend with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Penn State's Kelly Mengel.
After earning her second singles victory of the fall season Saturday, sophomore Samantha Harris was unable to replicate the result Sunday morning, falling to South Carolina's Paige Cline, 6-2, 6-2. Harris' record for the fall campaign moved to 2-1 with the loss.
With the conclusion of the fall season, the Blue Devils remain off from competition until the start of the 2016 campaign Jan. 15, when Duke travels to Las Vegas, Nev., for the three-day UNLV Invitational.
