DURHAM, N.C.—Duke sophomore center back Markus Fjørtoft has been named the ACC Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week following the Blue Devils 2-0 week. This is the first weekly honor for Fjørtoft and the second straight week a Blue Devil has garnered an ACC award.
Fjørtoft, Duke's leader at center back, helped anchor Duke's defense to a pair of crucial victories last week. The Blue Devils upset No. 10 Elon in a nonconference midweek matchup, allowing the Phoenix just a single goal en route to the 2-1 overtime victory. The native of Asker, Norwar played all 99 minutes in the game.
Four days later, Fjørtoft went the distance for the 12th time this season in holding Pittsburgh to just two shots overall and one on goal as Duke upended Pitt 1-0 to clinch a spot in the ACC Championship. The shutout was the second for the Blue Devils this season. Fjørtoft ranks second on the team in minutes played this season at 1,451 and has two goals and an assist for five points.
The Blue Devils finish non-conference play Tuesday night against Jacksonville. Kickoff with the Dolphins is set for 7 p.m., at Koskinen Stadium.
