PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – A trio of Blue Devils, senior Beatrice Capra and freshmen Ellyse Hamlin and Kaitlyn McCarthy, maintained a near-perfect singles record Tuesday afternoon in the qualifying singles draw of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif. The duo of Capra and Hamlin also secured a win in qualifying doubles draw action.
Capra and Hamlin opened play for the Blue Devils on a positive note, downing their opponent, Pepperdine's Laura Gulbe and Dzina Milovanovic, 8-3. Capra and Hamlin improve to 4-0 on the year with the win, and are scheduled to face Rebecca Pedrazzi and Aleksandra Trifunovic of Wichita State Wednesday.
Capra and Hamlin each returned to competition for the start of qualifying singles draw play. Capra, ranked 71st in the nation in the preseason Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) polls, downed her first singles opponent of the tournament, No. 54 Sophie Watts of Fresno State, 6-2, 6-0. Capra carried the momentum into her match with 24th-ranked Brianna Morgan of Florida, upsetting the No. 2 seed in the tournament, 7-5, 7-6 (4). The Ellicott City, Md., native is slated to face Francesca Di Lorenzo of Ohio State tomorrow.
Hamlin improved to 6-1 on the year in singles action after winning her first two contests of the qualifying draw. The Fairfield, Conn., native outlasted 103rd-ranked Gabriela Talaba of Texas Tech, 7-6 (3), 7-5, before returning to the courts and defeating 43rd-ranked Lauren Marker of Arizona, 6-4, 6-4. Hamlin is scheduled to compete against top-seeded Jasmine Lee of Mississippi State tomorrow afternoon.
McCarthy also hit the singles courts Tuesday, beginning the day of competition by defeating No. 59 Gabby Smith of USC, 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3. The Cary, N.C., native suffered her first loss in a Duke uniform in her second contest Tuesday, falling to fifth-seeded Stephanie Nauta of Virginia, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
Capra and Hamlin take the court Wednesday at 2:45 p.m. (ET) for singles play. Capra and Hamlin are also slated to compete in doubles play, with action resuming at 1:00 p.m. (ET).
