CARY, N.C. – The Duke women's tennis team concluded play Sunday morning at the Duke James Bonk Invite in Cary, N.C., with two Duke freshmen earning victories in the final of their respective draws. The two freshmen, Jessica Ho and Kaitlyn McCarthy, remained unbeaten in singles play throughout the weekend of competition.
For the third consecutive singles match, Ho required three sets to earn the win, clinching the Royal draw title with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 win over Ansley Speaks of Furman. McCarthy nearly went into a third set in her contest against Skylar Morton of Virginia, but a decisive tiebreak in the second set allowed her to take the win, 6-2, 7-6 (6). Both Ho and McCarthy own a 3-0 singles record to begin the college season.
Junior Chalena Scholl faced Kourtney Keegan of Florida in the final of the Grey draw, where she dropped the first set, 6-3, and trailed 3-0 in the second set before retiring. Fellow junior Alyssa Smith was also unable to earn the victory over her opponent, Ashley Dai of North Carolina, in the third-place match of the Grey draw, falling, 6-2, 6-1. Sophomore Rebecca Smaller forced a third set in her consolation third-place match against TCU's Olaya Garrido-Rivas, but ultimately suffered a defeat. After dropping the first set, Smaller fought back to take the second, but was unable to hold on in the third as she fell, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
Select members of the Duke squad return to competition Saturday, Oct. 3, traveling to Pacific Palisades, Calif., for the Riviera All-American tournament.
