DURHAM, N.C. – Duke turned in a solid third-quarter performance to down North Carolina by a 71-55 score Sunday in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Sophomore Azurá Stevens followed up a 33-point output Thursday by earning her ACC-leading 12th double-double of the season and graduate student Amber Henson recorded a career-high 16 rebounds to move the Blue Devils to 15-6 overall and 4-3 in ACC action.
Stevens finished with 26 points and 14 boards while redshirt sophomore Rebecca Greenwell chipped in 16 points and junior Oderah Chidom 15. As a team, Duke held a 38-22 advantage in the paint and limited the Tar Heels to just 26 percent shooting from the floor to collect its fourth consecutive win over its Tobacco Road rival.
The Blue Devils opened up with a 7-2 advantage before going cold from the field for a stretch. Stevens then sparked a 9-0 run that put the home squad ahead 18-10 at the end of the first period.
Defensively, Duke held the Tar Heels scoreless on their first eight attempts from behind the arc. Henson spearheaded the Blue Devils' rebounding effort with six in the first 15 minutes but North Carolina pulled down key offensive boards to take the lead. Duke rattled off eight unanswered to get back in front, 36-34, heading into the half.
Stevens paced all players with 16 points at the intermission and also had eight rebounds.
Duke stepped up its rebounding effort in the second half, pushing the margin to double digits. Stevens joined Henson in double figures on the boards and the Blue Devils outscored the Tar Heels 15-6 in the third frame to lead by 11.
In the final quarter, Duke continued to exploit its height advantage inside. Stevens notched her ninth game this season with 20 or more points and Greenwell added a late trey to round out the contest on a 12-2 run.
Jamie Cherry paced North Carolina (12-10, 2-5 ACC) with 16 points while three Tar Heels players reached double figures in the rebounding column.
