PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – A pair of Blue Devils, sophomore Ellyse Hamlin and freshman Meible Chi, opened play at the 2016 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif., Saturday, with Chi posting consecutive victories during the first two rounds of the pre-qualifying singles draw.
Chi opened pre-qualifying singles play with a convincing 7-6 (4), 6-1 win over Arkansas' Shannon Hudson, before returning to the courts and defeating Ohio State's 99th-ranked Miho Kowase in three sets, 6-1, 3-6, 7-5. With the back-to-back victories, Chi improved her singles record this fall to a perfect 5-0. The Weston, Fla., native is set to face Winthrop's Lauren Proctor at 3:30 p.m. (ET) for a chance to play into the qualifying draw.
Hamlin split her two contests Saturday while competing in pre-qualifying singles competition. Hamlin began her day by outlasting Miami's Maci Epstein, 7-6 (1), 4-6, 6-2. The Fairfield, Conn., native was unable to maintain her momentum however, as she fell to Pepperdine's Ashley Lahey, 6-0, 6-3. Saturday's contests marked the 2016 singles debut for Hamlin.
