DURHAM, N.C. -- Members of the Duke women's tennis team posted a perfect 5-0 record in singles play to highlight day one of the Kitty Harrison Invitational, held at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center in Durham, N.C.
Seniors Chalena Scholl and Alyssa Smith, junior Rebecca Smaller, redshirt sophomore Christina Makarova and sophomore Kaitlyn McCarthy each picked up a singles win against a Texas Tech opponent to close out the first day of play. Scholl defeated Gabriela Talaba, 4-6, 6-1, 1-0, while Smith downed Katelyn Jackson, 6-4, 6-1. Smaller also won in straight sets, defeating Lynn Kiro, 7-6, 6-0. McCarthy picked up a 6-4, 6-3 win over Felicity Maltby, and Makarova rounded out Duke's singles results with a 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 win over Alba Cortina-Pou.
The Blue Devils return to singles action against Penn State at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
Duke began the day with doubles play, facing off against tandems from Minnesota. The Blue Devil pairing of Scholl and McCarthy picked up its fourth win of the season after defeating Minnesota's Cammy Frei and Caroline Ryba, 8-5. The duo of Smith and Smaller was unable to pull out the victory over Maja Vujic and Barbara Mancera however, dropping the contest, 8-4.
Smith and Smaller rebounded in the second morning session of doubles while facing Virginia's team of Camille Favero and Meghan Kelley. The Blue Devil duo picked up its first win of the year with an 8-4 victory over the Cavaliers. McCarthy and Scholl suffered a setback in their second doubles match of the day, dropping an 8-4 decision to Virginia's Chloe Gullickson and Cassie Mercer.
Day two action at the Kitty Harrison Invitational begins at 9 a.m. with doubles.
