DURHAM, N.C.—After one weekend of action on the wrestling mat, a trio of Blue Devils is peppered throughout the first installment of the weekly rankings. Connor Bass, Jake Faust and Jacob Kasper all landed in the top 20 after strong showings on opening weekend.
Faust, the lone Blue Devil to be ranked in the preseason polls, moved to 15th by InterMat after starting the season at 14th. FloWrestling listed the veteran 165-pounder at eighth and TheOpenMat.com 10th after he advanced to the quarterfinal of the Southeast Open before suffering an injury. An NCAA qualifier at 165, Faust heads into the season with a 50-26 career record.
Making the jump up to heavyweight from 184 pounds, Kasper jumped into the polls this week following his title at the Southeast Open. He debuts at No. 15 in the InterMat poll, 16th by FloWrestling and 14th on TheOpenMat.com list. Kasper captured his first title at heavyweight this past weekend, upsetting 16th-ranked Billy Miller of Edinboro in the quarterfinal. He is 5-0 to start the season.
Bass, also moving up two weights to 174, also brought home a Southeast Open title last weekend. FloWrestling took notice of his overtime upset of No. 13 Jon Schleifer in the title bout and put him 17th in its poll. He is 15th according to TheOpenMat.com.
Duke opens its dual season Saturday against No. 23 Oregon State at Appalachian State. The dual will be the first of two ranked opponents the Blue Devils will face in the month of November.
