DURHAM, N.C.—The Duke wrestling team has had a long layoff from competition with the last action coming on Nov. 20 at the Wolfpack Open. One of the top takeaways from the early season competition has been the steady improvement of junior 125-pounder Thayer Atkins.
Atkins, Duke's starter at 125 pounds throughout his career, is off to a strong start in the 2016-17 season. He is 11-3 overall and 1-0 in duals with a win over his foe at Wisconsin. He most recently took fifth at the Wolfpack Open, edging Gage Curry of American 4-3 in the fifth-place match.
His 11 wins are more than he had all of last season, demonstrating the Dallas native's improvement. He is two wins shy of matching his total from the previous two seasons combined.
Blue Devil Network recently caught up with Atkins and head coach Glen Lanham to talk about his improvement and his goals for the 2016-17 campaign.
