DURHAM, N.C. -- Freshman Meible Chi posted an impressive fall campaign that included earning a spot as an at-large selection into the 2016 ITA National Indoors competition, where she played into the semifinal round of the event. Chi led the Blue Devils with an overall singles record of 15-4 and added four doubles wins to her ledger over the first semester of her collegiate career.
GoDuke.com recently caught up with Chi to hear about her first fall in Durham, and what she is looking forward to for the 2017 dual match season.
GoDuke.com: What did you learn during the fall season?
Meible Chi: I came into school not really sure how I would stack up against other players, but after this fall, it felt like I proved to myself that I could play at a high level, even in college, not just in juniors. I have more self-confidence in what I can do. I had good results, but mentally, I feel like it helped me a lot. I am looking forward to the spring to show that I can do it not only in individual tournaments, but I can also do it for a team, and play just as well that way.
GD: Did you go through any type of transitional period?
MC: We have a National Fed Cup Tournament, so we play with our section in a team format, but I feel it will be very different for the upcoming season. The level is a bit different, and you're closer with the members of the team. I think it will be a lot more energetic and intense.
GD: What are you looking forward to the most during the dual match season?
MC: The support you get during the matches with your teammates, the crowd and your coaches. During individual tournaments you can't always get coaching, so I feel like having people right next to me, pushing me along and encouraging me, is what I'm really excited for.
GD: What worked well for you this past fall?
MC: Not having too many expectations for what I should do. I don't think I was so nervous that I couldn't play at all. During the matches that I lost, in a majority of them I played well, but I just lost in the end. I took it one match at a time. I knew I could play well, based on juniors, but now, since there are so many tournaments, you need to take one match at a time. You need to take every match the same way. I feel like that helped me finish the fall strong.
GD: Do you have any pre-match rituals?
MC: I don't really have a pre-match ritual. I usually stay by myself and make sure I'm ready to go. I might then talk to some friends or my mom, not necessarily about the match, but small things, to keep my mind relaxed. I've started to get active a little bit more, so when I get out, I can start playing my level from the beginning. That's changed in college, too. I've focused more on what I do before and after matches.
