DURHAM, N.C.— Former Duke standout Elizabeth Williams will have her jersey retired Thursday, Dec. 29 as the Blue Devils will host Kentucky at 7 p.m., in Cameron Indoor Stadium. If you haven't bought your tickets yet, make sure you have your calendars marked as you will not want to miss the special evening.
Prior to the jersey retirement, Williams reflects on the upcoming event:
GoDuke.com: How excited are you to come back to Durham for the jersey retirement?
Elizabeth Williams: I'm super excited to come back to Durham! I seriously can't wait to see everyone again and spend time with the staff, friends and teammates. It will be exciting to see all of the updates on campus as well!
GD: When you heard your jersey was going to be retired, what went through your mind?
EW: When I heard my jersey would be retired I immediately thought of Alana Beard and Lindsey Harding. They meant so much to the program and I immediately felt honored to be part of that legacy. Humbled is one of the best words to describe how I felt.
GD: To have your jersey hang in Cameron Indoor Stadium with all the other banners, what will that mean to you?
EW: To have my jersey hanging up in Cameron means so much. It is a testament to my family, firstly. They have supported my basketball journey from day one and served as motivation for me. My teammates and all the people on staff helped fulfill the experience as well. There is such a rich history in the Duke basketball program, so to be part of that is a blessing.
GD: How has your season in Russia been going so far?
EW: This Russian season has actually been going really well. Our team is currently in third position in Russian league and tied for first in our EuroLeague group. My teammates are hilarious and make the frigid weather a lot more bearable. To say it's cold would be a severe understatement (it was -30 right before I left) so any weather in the USA feels like paradise!
