CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Blue Devil swimmers claimed 18 of 24 individual events and swept all four relays to defeat the Queens men and women Saturday in dual meet action at the Royals' Levine Center Pool.
Sophomore Mickayla Hinkle and freshman Alyssa Marsh helped pace the Duke women (4-1) to a 169.5-87 victory as double individual event winners. Hinkle swept both women's backstroke events while Marsh claimed the sprint races, headlining a 1-2-3 sweep by the Blue Devils at the 100-yard distance.
The men's team (4-1) defeated the Royals by a 146-111 margin behind a balanced team effort. Senior Peter Kropp (55.01) and sophomore Max St. George (1:46.05) each posted NCAA 'B' cuts in winning the 100 breaststroke and 200 backstroke, respectively.
“A lot of times, after we do our fall invite, we don't compete again until January,” said head coach Dan Colella. “Our friend Jeff Dugdale, the head coach at Queens, invited us to come down and swim. They've won the [Division II] national championship the last two years. They're very competitive – we had some great racing going on today … Obviously the student-athletes' big focus is finishing up the semester, but it was a great way to get a competition in, stay sharp and go into the holidays with a little more racing under their belts.”
Other individual event winners on the men's side included junior Matt Johnson in the 1,000 freestyle, senior Kaz Takabayashi in the 200 butterfly, senior Bradley Cline in the 100 freestyle, sophomore Judd Howard in the 200 breaststroke and senior Dylan Payne in the 100 butterfly. Payne raced to the wall in 49.17 in that race for the 10th-fastest mark in program history.
Howard (2:02.76) helped Duke sweep the top three spots in the 200 breaststroke, with senior Michael Seaberg (2:06.08) and Kropp (2:06.60) coming in just behind him. Howard was also second behind Kropp in the 100 breaststroke, while freshman Daichi Matsuda (1:51.70) teamed with Takabayashi (1:50.59) for a 1-2 finish in the 200 butterfly.
The Blue Devil women turned in an impressive showing in the 200 butterfly as well, claiming the top four spots. Senior Colleen Wixted led the way at 2:03.54, followed by junior Anna Quinn (2:03.88), freshman Kylie Jordan (2:04.38) and junior Leah Goldman (2:04.96). The women earned a similar sweep in the 200 IM, highlighted by Hunter Aitchison's first-place finish (2:06.41), and in the 100 freestyle, 200 backstroke and the 500 freestyle.
Individual event winners for the women also included freshman Brittany Kampfer in the 1,000 freestyle, senior Brittany Friese in the 200 freestyle, senior Ashleigh Shanley in the 100 breaststroke, junior Verity Abel in the 500 freestyle and Jordan in the 100 butterfly.
Duke also excelled in the relay events, claiming both 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays.
“The men's 200 free relay came down to the last leg and Dylan Payne had a really monster split,” Colella said. “Same with Alyssa Marsh on the women's side. Going into the last leg they were ahead, and both Dylan and Alyssa had super anchor swims and did a great job of getting it done and winning both relays. It was a great way to finish up.”
With their final meet of the 2016 calendar year in the books, the Blue Devil squads return to action Saturday, Jan. 14, 2017 in a dual meet against South Carolina at Taishoff Aquatics Pavilion.
