WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Duke traveled to Winston-Salem, N.C., Sunday and saw its 44-game winning streak against Wake Forest come to an end as the Demon Deacons defeated the Blue Devils, 64-58, at Lawrence Joel Memorial Coliseum.
With the loss, Duke drops to 17-10 overall and 6-7 in the ACC, while Wake Forest improves to 15-11, 6-7 in the league.
Duke opened the game on fire going on an 11-0 run to take a 11-2 advantage at the 4:59 mark of the first quarter, which forced the Demon Deacons to take a timeout. Following that timeout, Wake Forest would go on a 13-0 run of its own to take a 16-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Blue Devils would take a 21-18 advantage at the 6:36 mark of the second quarter on a three-pointer by freshman Angela Salvadores. Wake Forest came back to close the quarter strong with another 13-0 run and led 33-22 at the break. The Demon Deacons went on an overall 31-11 run, after Duke led 11-2 early in the first quarter.
Salvadores led Duke with seven first half points, but the Blue Devils hit only 28.6 percent from the field over the first 20 minutes.
The Blue Devils came out on fire in the third quarter and went on a 7-0 run to force Wake Forest to call a timeout at the 7:55 mark. Duke continued its run by taking a 36-35 advantage with 6:59 left in the third, after a 14-2 run. It included eight points by redshirt sophomore Rebecca Greenwell and six by Oderah Chidom.
At the end of the third period, Duke and Wake Forest were tied, 38-38, as the Blue Devils held the Demon Deacons to only five points in the quarter.
Duke went ahead 42-40 in the fourth period and that would be the last lead for the Blue Devils as Wake Forest went off on an 11-1 run to lead 51-43. The Blue Devils cut the lead to 54-50 with 2:02 remaining after Chidom connected on two free throws. Duke couldn't get any closer the rest of the way.
Salvadores, who hails from Leon, Spain, had 16 points and in two contests against the Demon Deacons has totaled 34 points. Chidom scored a team-high 18 points, while Greenwell added 11 points on 3-of-5 treys.
Amber Campbell scored 27 points for Wake Forest.
Blue Devil redshirt freshman Lyneé Belton did not make the trip to Winston-Salem, N.C., after suffering a hyperextended left knee in the last game against Florida State.
Duke will next travel to Blacksburg, Va., to take on Virginia Tech Thursday, Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. The game will be aired live on ESPN3.
