DURHAM, N.C.—Duke University wrestling head coach Glen Lanham has announced the 2016-17 schedule. The Blue Devils will wrestle at home four times, including against Big Ten foe Wisconsin and ACC rival North Carolina.
Duke kicks off the campaign, the fifth for Lanham, with the annual Hokie Open Nov. 6 in Roanoke, Va. The Blue Devils captured three Hokie Open titles a year ago, including ones from returning wrestlers Jake Faust and Connor Bass.
The Blue Devils open dual action the following weekend, Nov. 12, against Oregon State and Coker College at Appalachian State. Those matches are set to begin at 12 and 2 p.m., respectively. It is the first meeting between Duke and the Beavers, while Oregon State is third Pac-12 wrestling programs the Blue Devils have faced under Lanham.
A week later, Nov. 19, Duke will make its home debut in Card Gymnasium against Big Ten foe Wisconsin for the first time in program history. Duke defeated a pair of Big Ten opponents during the 2014-15 season and upset a ranked Purdue squad last season. The Badgers finished 23rd at the 2016 NCAA Championships and eighth at the grueling Big Ten Championships. The match with Wisconsin will be the ninth different Big Ten program Duke has wrestled under Lanham.
Duke closes out the calendar year with the Wolfpack Open Nov. 20. Duke placed seven wrestlers at the event a year ago with Zach Finesilver taking runner-up honors.
The Blue Devils kick off the New Year with the annual Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tenn., Jan. 1-2. Duke finished a program-best 12th last year and placed two wrestlers for the first time in program history at the prestigious tournament.
The following week, the grueling duals schedule starts with Hofstra and C.W. Post in Long Island. It is the first meeting against both of the programs.
Duke opens ACC action at a tough NC State squad Jan. 11. The Blue Devils are 2-2 against the Wolfpack under Lanham. Appalachian State pays a visit to Durham the next week as the two programs square off for the sixth straight season. Duke is 3-2 in the previous five meetings with the Mountaineers.
Non-conference duals at Navy, Old Dominion and Gardner-Webb in a span of 10 days begin a grueling stretch for the Blue Devils. Duke will wrestle six matches, including three ACC bouts, in a 22-day stretch.
The Blue Devils will host Virginia and North Carolina in that stretch. Duke looks to add another win over the Tar Heels after upsetting North Carolina in Chapel Hill in 2016.
Duke closes out its regular season at Pittsburgh Feb. 18. The Blue Devils are looking for their first win over the Panthers after narrowly falling 20-15 a year ago.
The ACC Championships will be held at NC State, March 4, while the NCAA Championships are back in St. Louis March 16-19.
