DURHAM, N.C. – Behind a strong outing from sophomore pitcher
Shelby Walters, Duke softball notched a 2-0 shutout over Rutgers on Sunday afternoon at the Duke Softball Stadium.
With the win, the Blue Devils went unbeaten (4-0) during the 2020 Big 10/ACC Challenge and improved to 8-1 overall while the Scarlet Knights fell to 5-4.
Duke recorded its first hit of the contest in the second frame as freshman
Gisele Tapia sent a bullet towards third base for a single. In the next at-bat, freshman
Kamryn Jackson singled through the right side to put two runners on, but a double play would end the Blue Devils' threat.
Junior
Jameson Kavel started the third with a leadoff single to left center and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore
Kristina Foreman. Batting in the first run of the game, junior
Rachel Crabtree double to left and put Duke ahead, 1-0.
The Blue Devils plated the final run of the game in the fifth, beginning with a single from junior
Kendyl Lange. Kavel followed with her second hit of the contest, sending a ball to right field, and Crabtree loaded the bases as she was hit by a pitch. Sophomore
Caroline Jacobsen made it a 2-0 game as Lange scored on a foul ball sac fly.
Walters hurled seven innings in which she tallied six strikeouts while only giving up two hits. The Georgia native didn't walk a single batter as she picked up her third victory (3-0) in the circle this season.
Duke returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 19, with a home game against Campbell at 6 p.m. before heading to Austin for the Texas Invitational on Feb. 21-22.
