RALEIGH, N.C. – Along with a strong outing from junior
Peyton St. George in the circle and nine hits, Duke softball topped NC State, 5-1, on Wednesday evening at the Curtis & Jacqueline Dail Stadium.
With the victory, the Blue Devils improved to 14-2 on the year as the Wolfpack fell to 11-5. St. George secured her fifth win of the season (5-1) while recording five strikeouts.
Senior
Raine Wilson sparked the offense early, blasting a solo home run to left field for the second time this season to put Duke ahead, 1-0. The Wolfpack answered in the bottom half as Logan Morris hit a home run to tie the game at 1-1.
Looking to regain momentum, sophomore
Caroline Jacobsen garnered her second hit of the contest with a single to center. Junior
Jameson Kavel dropped a ball over the shortstop's head in shallow left field and Jacobsen safely crossed home plate on a throwing error, giving Duke a 2-1 lead.
Sophomore
Deja Davis tallied the Blue Devils' second home run in the top of the fifth, crushing a solo homer over the center field wall (3-1). Stepping up to the plate with two outs in the sixth, freshman
Gisele Tapia picked up a hit and was brought home on a triple from Kavel – her third of the 2020 campaign – to expand Duke's lead to 4-1.
NC State looked to rally in the bottom of the sixth, notching two hits to load the bases but Jacobsen ended the threat, catching a fly ball in right field for the third out.
Redshirt junior
Jazmine Moreno sent a leadoff single to left in the seventh and Davis reached on an error. Wilson walked to load the bases and Duke quickly scored a run on a wild pitch (5-1).
Duke returns to action on Friday, hosting Notre Dame in its first ACC series of the season. Game one is set for 5 p.m. at the Duke Softball Stadium. Saturday's contest will start at 2 p.m. while first pitch on Sunday is slated for 1 p.m.
