DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke volleyball team opened its 2021 home slate with a 3-0 sweep (25-17, 25-23, 25-21) over Appalachian State Wednesday evening in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
With the victory, the Blue Devils improve to 8-2 overall with a four-match win streak as the Mountaineers drop to 1-14.
Once again, the Blue Devils were led by
Ade Owokoniran and
Gracie Johnson with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Owokoniran hit an impressive .370 for the match with just one error as Duke combined for a .214 clip as a team.
Lizzie Fleming and
Lily Cooper added seven and five kills, respectively, as setter
Alex Springate was able to find the Blue Devils with 22 assists.
At the net, Fleming and Cooper tallied four blocks each while rookie
Georgia Stavrinides added three for 7.0 total team blocks.
Defensively, junior libero
Mackenzie Cole picked up 16 digs after joining the 1,000-dig club last week.
Johnson started off hot in the first set with four kills to Owokoniran's three as the Mountaineers were limited to a .026 hitting percentage with eight attack errors.
Both the Blue Devils and Mountaineers tallied three service aces in the second frame, but Fleming and Cooper's four blocks helped limit its opponent to a .111 hitting percentage. The Blue Devils held a slight 24-22 advantage and could've won the set before
Camille Nazor forced her second service error. Duke bounced back as Nazor found Fleming to knock down the kill and end the set.
Duke had seven service errors in the third set to give Appalachian State the opportunity to capitalize, but Johnson put it away with back-to-back kills to give Duke its eighth win of the year.
The Mountaineers were led by McCall Denny with 11 kills as setter Sam Bickley dished 23 assists.
The Blue Devils will travel to NC State Friday, Feb. 26, for a 7 p.m. match.
