RALEIGH, N.C. – The Cleveland State volleyball team notched a season-best 52 kills and hit a season-best .210 attack percentage to surge the Vikings past the Blue Devils, 3-1 (21-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-17), in a neutral site match as part of the Wolfpack Invitational Sunday afternoon inside Reynolds Coliseum. The Blue Devils fall to a 3-6 overall record, while CSU improves to an 1-8 overall ledger.
Sophomore outside hitter Taylor Williams logged a team-best 14 kills, and sophomore outside hitter Avery Hamlin added 10 terminations. Freshman setter Charlotte Glass dished out 35 helpers to lead Duke. On the other end of the court, freshman middle blocker Zoë Gillen-Malveaux logged four blocks, while sophomore libero Mailinh Godschall tallied 18 digs.
How It Happened
Set One – Duke 25, Cleveland State 21
- The Blue Devils took an 1-0 lead with a 25-21 win in the opening set. The set was tied at 6-6 before Duke rattled off six of the next seven points to build a 12-7 advantage. CSU cut Duke's lead to 14-12, but the Blue Devils answered, winning six of the next eight points to push out to the 20-14 edge. The Vikings scored three straight, but Duke held firm and traded points the rest of the way before a Williams kill sealed the set for the Blue Devils, 25-21.
Set Two – Duke 21, Cleveland State 25
- The match was tied at one set apiece, with CSU taking the second frame, 25-21. The frame was knotted seven times, but the Vikings surged past an 18-18 lockup with six straight points to carry them to a 24-18 lead. The Blue Devils fought for a comeback, taking three consecutive marks, but a kill from CSU's Laken Voss sealed the set in the Vikings' favor.
Set Three – Duke 22, Cleveland State 25
- The Vikings took a 2-1 lead with a 25-22 win in the second set. Duke overcame an early 5-4 CSU advantage by taking seven of the next eight points to build an 11-6 edge. The teams traded points until a four-point Viking surge tied the frame at 14-14. Duke notched a point, but CSU followed with a five-point run to go up, 19-15. The Blue Devils responded by winning four of the next five to pull within one, 20-19. However, the Vikings closed strong, claiming five of the final eight points to seal the set.
Set Four – Duke 17, Utah Valley 25
- CSU clinched the match with a 25-17 win in the final set. Duke held the 5-4 advantage before the Vikings went on a three-point push to take the 7-5 lead. The Bue Devils and Vikings went point-for-point until CSU extended its lead to 14-8 following a four-point spurt. Duke followed by securing three of the next four markers, but CSU pushed its lead back out to 19-11 with four straight points. Duke took four of the next five points, but CSU closed the match, winning five points and constricting the Blue Devils to two, rounding out the Vikings' 25-17 win.
