DURHAM, N.C. –  The Duke volleyball team notched a 25-22 win in the third frame to force a fourth set, but Virginia rallied late to close out the match. In the fourth set, the Blue Devils held a 21-18 advantage before the Cavaliers battled back, taking seven of the final eight points to secure a 3-1 (25-20, 25-23, 22-25, 25-22) victory Sunday afternoon inside Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Freshman Ashby Zubchevich paced Duke's attack, finishing one shy of her career high with 20 kills while hitting at a career-best .371 clip. Sophomore Taylor Williams added a double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs. Freshman Charlotte Glass ran the offense, posting 38 assists while adding 13 digs.Â
Duke falls to 5-22 overall and 2-14 in ACC play, while Virginia improves to 11-15 and 4-12 in conference action.
How It Happened
Set One – Duke 20, Virginia 25 Â
- Virginia opened the match with a 25-20 win in the first frame. The set was tied at 6-6 before the Cavaliers created a 12-8 cushion with a 6-2 run. Duke responded by taking five of the next seven points, sparked by two kills from redshirt senior Ngozi Iloh, to pull within one at 14-13. Virginia answered with another surge, building a 23-17 lead. Duke added three more kills, but the Cavaliers closed out the set with two kills.
Set Two – Duke 23, Virgina 25
- Virginia extended its match lead with a 25-23 victory in the second set. The set was tied at 10-10 before Duke captured four of the next five points to go ahead 14-11. Virginia responded with a five-point spurt, but Duke stopped the Cavaliers run by taking three of the next four marks, evening the set at 17-17. Virginia broke through the lockup with a 6-1 run to take a 23-18 advantage. Helped by two Zubchevich kills, Duke answered with four straight points, but Virginia sealed the frame by taking two of the final three.
Set Three – Duke 25, Virginia 22Â
- Duke extended the match with a 25-22 win in the third set. The set was tightly contested, featuring 10 ties and four lead shifts. Virginia led 19-18 before Duke surged ahead, taking six of the next seven points — fueled by three Williams kills — to build a 24-20 lead. The Cavaliers added two more points, but a Williams putaway closed the frame for the Blue Devils.
Set Four – Duke 22, Virginia 25Â
- Virginia secured the match with a 25-22 victory in the fourth. The set saw nine ties, including a 13-13 deadlock, before Duke created a 17-14 advantage with a 4-1 rally. The teams traded pairs of points, with Virginia trimming the deficit to 21-20. Williams tallied a kill for Duke, but the Cavaliers closed the match by claiming the final five points.
