STANFORD, Calif. – The Blue Devil volleyball team closed out their California road trip by dropping a 3-0 (25-9, 25-13, 25-14) decision to fifth-ranked Stanford Saturday night inside Maples Pavilion.
Duke was led offensively by Taylor Williams with six kills on a match-high 34 total attacks to hit at a .029 clip, while freshman Charlotte Glass led the Blue Devils with nine assists. Defensively, sophomore Mailinh Godschall anchored the back row with eight digs.Â
Duke drops to 5-20 overall and 2-12 in ACC play, while Stanford, which sits atop the conference standings, improves to 21-3 overall and 13-1 in league action.
How It Happened
Set One – Duke 9, Stanford 25Â
- The Cardinal claimed the opening frame with a 25-9 victory. Stanford jumped out to a 9-2 lead before Duke took four of the next six points, highlighted by kills from Williams and freshman Ashby Zubchevich, to cut Duke's deficit to 11-6. The Cardinal responded with a four-point burst to extend their edge to 15-6, but Williams halted Stanford's momentum with back-to-back terminations. Stanford took the set by securing 10 of the final 11 points.Â
Set Two – Duke 13, Stanford 25Â
- Stanford took a 2-0 match lead with a 25-13 win in the second set. The Blue Devils trailed 5-2 early before going on a 4-2 run, spurred by an ace from freshman Olivia Wayne and a kill from redshirt senior Ngozi Iloh, to pull within one at 7-6. The Cardinal extended their edge to 16-8 with a 9-2 push, but Duke responded by taking three of the next five points to cut the margin, 18-11. Stanford closed the frame strong, registering seven of the final nine points to take the set.
Set Three – Duke 14, Stanford 25Â
- The match was decided in the Cardinal's favor with a 25-14 triumph in set three. Stanford took control of the frame at 10-3 before Duke garnered two consecutive points, putting the set within reach, 10-5. Stanford moved ahead, 19-9, following a 9-4 spurt. Duke answered, taking four of the next five points, trimming Stanford's lead, 20-13, but the Cardinal completed their sweep by collecting five of the final six points.
