BERKELEY, Calif. – The Duke volleyball team was swept, 3-0 (25-21, 25-13, 25-18), by California Friday night inside Haas Pavilion. Sophomore Taylor Williams tallied seven kills to eclipse 450 career terminations, while freshman Charlotte Glass surpassed 400 assists on the season with 13 against the Golden Bears.
Defensively, Williams and sophomore Mailinh Godschall each registered double-digit digs, logging 11 and 10, respectively. At the net, Williams led with four total blocks.
Duke falls to 5-19 overall and 2-11 in ACC play, while California improves to 7-16 and 4-9 in conference action.
How It Happened
Set One – Duke 21, California 25Â
- The Golden Bears claimed the opening frame with a 25-21 win. Duke started the first set strong, jumping out to an 8-5 lead. Cal tied the frame, 10-10, but the Blue Devils responded with a 4-1 push to go up 14-11, highlighted by a block assist and a pair of terminations from Williams. The momentum shifted in the Golden Bears favor, as Cal went on an 8-2 run to take the 19-16 ledger. Duke responded with two straight points, but Cal closed the frame by taking six of the final nine to earn the set.
Set Two – Duke 13, California 25Â
- Cal pushed out to a 2-0 match lead with a 25-13 triumph in set two. Duke built a 4-2 edge to open the frame, but Cal took control, taking 13 of the next 15 points to earn a 15-6 lead. Junior Lauren Ingram logged a kill for Duke, but the Golden Bears extended their ledger to 19-8 following a 4-1 run. Duke took five of the next seven points, cutting its deficit, 21-13, but Cal rattled off four straight marks to finish the set.Â
Set Three – Duke 18, California 25Â
- Cal rounded out its sweep with a 25-18 victory in the final frame. The Golden Bears jumped out to a 7-3 lead, but Duke rallied to tie the frame at 8-8 behind kills from redshirt senior Ngozi Iloh and Williams. Cal answered with a 9-1 run to take a commanding 17-9 lead. Williams notched a kill and an ace to spark a 4-2 Blue Devil run, cutting the deficit to 19-13. The teams traded points late, with Cal holding a 23-15 advantage. Duke responded with three straight marks before the Golden Bears sealed the match with back-to-back kills.
