ORLANDO, Fla. – Facing a late night and a marathon match, the Duke women's tennis program dropped its NCAA Tournament quarterfinal match to No. 1 North Carolina, 4-1, on Wednesday night at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.
The day began with the Blue Devils (18-7) giving the Tar Heels all they could handle in doubles. While the duos of No. 9
Chloe Beck/
Karolina Berankova and No. 41
Kelly Chen/
Georgia Drummy dropped early breaks, both responded quickly. In Beck/Berankova's match, the duo fell behind 2-4, but secured a service hold and a break to tie the match at four. However, a late break by North Carolina's No. 4 ranked team in the country gave the Tar Heels their first match 6-4.
In one of the best performances on the day, the Blue Devils answered on court one. The No. 10 team of
Margaryta Bilokin/
Meible Chi delivered one of the biggest wins of the year, defeating the No. 2 doubles team in the nation, 6-2. After falling to the same pair earlier in the season on March 19, the Blue Devil duo earned an early break to take a 3-1 lead and imposed their will from there, setting up a decisive doubles point clash on court three.
After dropping an opening break, Chen/Drummy answered with a break of their own to tie the match at 2-2. Both teams traded service holds in a back-and-forth affair, but a critical break of serve by the Tar Heels at 5-5, proved to be the difference, with Chen/Drummy falling 7-5 and giving North Carolina a 1-0 lead.
The Tar Heels would add onto their lead, securing the first singles match of the day over Bilokin. However, sophomore
Chloe Beck had an answer, defeating UNC's No. 27 Cameron Morra for the second straight time, building a commanding lead, and hanging on for a 6-1, 6-4 victory. The Watkinsville, Ga., native secured two breaks in the first set and raced out to a 5-1 lead. While Morra delivered a response, taking a 3-1 lead in the second, Beck was not phased and managed to hang on and record a critical victory for the Blue Devils.
In an indication of the battle between the two programs, all four remaining matches went three sets. North Carolina took a 3-1 lead after Berankova dropped a three-set decision, 7-5, 1-6, 1-6. After falling behind 0-4 in the first set, Berankova rallied for five straight games and ended the first set with four service breaks. However, her No. 117 ranked opponent rallied in the second set and held on to put the Blue Devils on the brink.
After an early first set loss, Chen responded against the No. 2 player in the nation. The Cerritos, Calif., native showed grittiness after the early deficit, recovering to hold her first three service games before notching a key break of serve to start a run of five straight games and take the second set 6-2. Her huge comeback was stopped short however, as Chi fell in the final match in three sets to give the Tar Heels the victory.
Following the conclusion of the team portion of the regular season, the Blue Devils will turn their attention to the NCAA Individual Championships from May 23-28 in Orlando, Fla. Six Blue Devils are set to compete across the singles and doubles competitions.
