CLEMSON, S.C. – Graduate student
Chase Cheek hit a two-run pinch-hit home run with two outs in the top of the ninth to power Duke past Clemson, 4-2, and complete the series sweep on Saturday afternoon at Doug Kingsmore Stadium in Duke's final game of the regular season.
The Blue Devils (28-20, 16-17 ACC) used two home runs to plate their four runs in the contest. Cheek's home run was his first of the season and proved to be the difference-maker. Junior
RJ Schreck also hit a two-run home run to bring his home run total to three for the series.
Freshman southpaw
Luke Fox started on the bump for the Blue Devils for the third consecutive weekend. Fox was a victim of soft contact as the Tigers tallied seven hits, but he able to work out of jams to only allow two runs in four innings of work. The Waukesha, Wis., native fanned six in his time on the mound.
Unlike the first two games of the series, Duke was unable to get the bats going early in the game as Clemson southpaw Caden Grice threw a perfect four innings for the Tigers. Graduate student
Peter Matt singled through the right side to lead off the fifth inning to become the first Blue Devil to reach base.
Clemson (24-26, 16-20) scored a run in the third and the fourth, both with two outs on soft-contact singles.
Duke was able to tie the game in the top of the sixth. Senior
Joey Loperfido singled through the left side to begin the inning before Schreck hit a two-run home run off the foul pole in left field. The long ball was Schreck's team-leading 15th of the season.
At 2-2 in the top of ninth, Clemson made a pitching change with a Blue Devil on first and two outs. To counter the right-handed pitcher, head coach
Chris Pollard entered Cheek into the game. Cheek saw two balls before taking the third pitch of the at-bat over the right field wall for the eventual game-winning runs.
Sophomore
Marcus Johnson was stellar in relief for Duke, entering the game to put in 3.1 scoreless innings of work. Johnson allowed just one hit and a walk while fanning four.
Duke awaits the announcement of the schedule for the ACC Tournament at Truist Field in Charlotte. The ninth-seeded Blue Devils will face fourth-seed Miami and fifth-seed Florida State in pool play as the schedule will be announced on Sunday. The Championships will run Tuesday, May 25 through Sunday, May 30.
Postgame Notes:
- Schreck recorded his 15th home run this season, tying former Duke head coach Sean McNally's 15 in 1994 to rank sixth in Duke history.
- Duke's 60 home runs this season rank fourth in program history and are the most in a single season since 1998.
