DURHAM, N.C.βWake Forest scored twice early in the first quarter to hand the 17th-ranked Blue Devils a 3-1 setback in the ACC field hockey opener on Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium Friday evening.
Duke falls to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in ACC play, while No. 15 Wake Forest moves to 3-3 and 1-0. The Blue Devils look to rebound quickly when they travel to James Madison Sunday at 1 p.m.
Noor van de Laar scored Duke's lone goal on the afternoon, redirecting a penalty corner shot from the stick of graduate student transfer
 MaryKate Neff.
Lexi Davidson provided the stop on the insert from sophomore
Barb Civitella in the 11th minute.
Wake Forest jumped on the Blue Devils early, scoring just three minutes in when Meike Lanckohr snuck a shot past Duke goalkeeper
Piper Hampsch. It was Lanckohr again six minutes later, netting her fifth goal of the season to give the Deacons a 2-0 lead.
"I'm not pleased with the way we came out," said head coach
Pam Bustin. "Friday night at home we have to set the tone and we have to make a statement. And as soon as the whistle blows and today we let Wake do that and that's unfortunate. On the other side of it, we really had opportunities in the second half to switch that. So we just have to get on the mindset of attacking."
The Blue Devils cut the lead in half less than two minutes later on a penalty corner. Civitella stepped to the endline and pushed the ball to the top of the circle to Davidson. Neff fired a shot toward the right side of the cage where van de Laar redirected it past Wake goalie Tori Glaister.
The turning point of the game came late in the second quarter as van de Laar broke down the left side and into the circle. The officials whistled Wake Forest for a foul, awarding Duke a penalty stroke for what seemingly could have been the equalizer.
However after a video review, the call was reversed and Wake Forest got the ball back looking to go the other way. The Demon Deacons did exactly that as they made their way down the field and earned a penalty corner with less than two minutes remaining. Β
Nat Friedman sent the ball in and Brook McCusker took a great shot to the right side of the cage for the 3-1 lead.
The Blue Devils possessed better in the second half and had good looks on three consecutive penalty corners in the fourth quarter, but couldn't find the back of the cage to overcome the early deficit.
In goal for Duke, Hampsch made five saves to continue to lead the ACC in the category. Glaister had three stops for the Deacons. Wake Forest held a 12-7 edge in shots and a narrow 7-6 advantage in penalty corners.
Following the James Madison game Sunday, Sept. 19, the Blue Devils return home to host ACC foe Louisville at 6 p.m.
