DURHAM – The No. 7 Duke women's lacrosse (12-1, 3-1 ACC) welcomes No. 16 Virginia (6-6, 2-3 ACC) to Koskinen Stadium for a 1 p.m., contest on ACCNX. Ben George (PxP) and former Duke women's lacrosse great Katie Chrest Erbe (color) will be on the call.
OPENING DRAW
Duke and Virginia meet for the 43rd time in program history as the Cavaliers lead the all-time series 26-16. Duke is 6-9 in games in Durham. Saturday's contest will feature two of the most successful Division I women's lacrosse coaches in
Kerstin Kimel and Julie Myers.
SCOUTING THE CAVALIERS
The Cavaliers enter Saturday's contest 6-6 overall and 2-3 in the ACC. Most recently, Virginia defeated Louisville (12-11). Offensively, Virginia is led by Rachel Clark (50 pts.), Ashlyn McGovern (43 pts.) and Morgan Schwab (33 pts.). The Cavaliers are averaging 15.33 goals per game and boast a .695 shot on goal percentage. Aubrey Williams is Virginia's main draw control specialist and owns 100 this season. Goalkeeper Ashley Vernon has amassed nearly 700 minutes in the cage and owns a 13.25 GAA and .393 save percentage.
TWO OF THE GREATEST IN DIVISION I
Saturday's contest will feature two of the most successful Division I women's lacrosse coaches in
Kerstin Kimel and Julie Myers. Kimel ranks sixth among active NCAA Division I head coaches with a 328-178 career record while Myers is fifth with a 344-170 ledger.
FAST & FURIOUS
Through 13 games, Duke has tallied a whopping 242 goals and 113 assists for 355 points. Its 18.62 goals per game and 27.23 points per game rank first and second, nationally. Duke has proven to score fast and furiously this season and has received scoring contributions from 21 different players. Not only are they scoring in bunches, the Blue Devils are also sharing the ball well, assisting on nearly half their goals with 113 assists on 242 goals, led by
Catriona Barry (24) and
Katie DeSimone (21).
WELCOME BACK ONE OF THE DWL GREATS
Duke Athletics Hall of Fame honoree Katie Chrest Erbe is heading back to Durham this weekend in a new role - color analyst for Duke's game against Virginia. The 2005 Tewaaraton Trophy winner, Chrest Erbe helped Duke to a four-year ledger of 61-18 with three ACC regular season championships, one ACC Tournament title and four NCAA Tournament berths including two appearances in the Final Four. The first player in ACC history to garner Rookie of the Year, Player of the Year and Tournament MVP honors, Chrest Erbe established the program's single-season record for total points with 96 in 2005 and graduated as the school's all-time leader in both goals (216) and points (287). She went on to help the United States to the 2009 Federation of International Lacrosse world championship.
THE FINAL COUNTDOWN
Duke has four games left in the regular season and is looking to close out one of its best performances in recent history. Following Saturday's contest against Virginia, the Blue Devils will travel to Virginia Tech (April 7) before their final home game Saturday April 16 against No. 2 Boston College. Duke will honor its seniors before the regular-season finale at No. 1 North Carolina (April 21). Duke is set for its toughest stretch of games so far this season with all four remaining teams either being ranked or receiving votes.
