DURHAM – The fourth-ranked Duke field hockey team scored a goal in three of four quarters and locked down Wake Forest en route to a 3-0 shutout victory over the Demon Deacons in ACC action Friday night on Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium.
Duke extends its win streak to seven games, improving to 9-1 overall and 3-0 in ACC play. Wake Forest drops to 3-5 and 0-2 in league action.
Sophomore

Kira Curland and
Charlie van Oirschot had the other goals for the Blue Devils.
How it Happened
- The Blue Devils were on the attack from the opening whistle, earning five penalty corners in the first 5:41 of the contest. Wake Forest defended Duke's attempts well, but the sixth proved to be the difference for the Blue Devils as McVeigh redirected a shot from Macy Szukics into the back of the cage at the 8:46 mark. Harkins provided the stop from Hannah Miller's insert on the corner.
- Duke continued to control the action, finishing with seven shots in the opening quarter and holding Wake Forest to just one attempt.
- The Demon Deacons started to get into the game offensively a little more in the second quarter, firing four shots. Duke goalkeeper Piper Hampsch came up with two saves to protect the shutout effort.
- With less than four minutes to play in the opening half, McVeigh sent a ball into the circle where junior Logan Clouser nearly tipped it in. The Bethlehem, Pa., native collected the loose ball, forcing pressure from a Wake Forest defender and goalkeeper. The ball bounced off a Demon Deacon stick and Curland calmly found the back of the cage for her fourth goal this season and a 2-0 lead heading into the break.
- Duke and Wake Forest combined for just three shots and two penalty corners in the third period, leaving the Blue Devils with a 2-0 lead with 15 minutes to play.
- Icing the victory in the 56th minute was van Oirschot. The senior captain knocked in a deflection off McVeigh's shot from the penalty corner. Harkins once again was there for the stop.
- Hampsch finished her night with three saves to help the Blue Devils to their fourth shutout of the season. Ellie Todd was in goal for Wake Forest, making five saves.
- Duke held a 14-8 advantage in shots and 9-3 edge in penalty corners.
