- Sunday's game will be the fifth time Duke and UNC will meet in NCAA Championship action and the third time in the quarterfinal round. Twenty years and three days ago - Nov. 14, 2004 - Duke pulled off the upset against the No. 1 Tar Heels, downing UNC on its home field, 2-1. It was North Carolina's second loss of the season.
- Johanna Bischof evened the score with a penalty stroke and then senior Chrissie Murphy scored on an assist from sophomore Amy Stopford to Duke up 2-1 with 17:25 remaining. Christy Morgan had five saves in the cage for the Blue Devils.
Â
A Win Sunday Would
- Be Pam Bustin's 176th at Duke
- Make Duke 28-19 in NCAA Championship action
- Send the Blue Devils to the semifinals for the eighth time and second consecutive season
- Put Bustin at 14-9 in NCAA Tournament action at Duke
Â
Last Time Out
- North Carolina got off to a fast start in the regular season meeting, going up 2-0 in the first 10 minutes. Duke cut the lead in half two minutes prior to the first break, but UNC responded 40 seconds later to take a 3-1 lead after 15 minutes.
- Duke stifled the Tar Heels for much of the next 45 minutes, holding the high-powered offense to just six shots in the next three quarters and to just three penalty corners for the entire game. However, North Carolina extended the lead to 4-1 on a Charly Bruder corner goal before Alaina McVeigh made it 4-2. The Tar Heels capped the scoring with an empty-net tally for the 5-2 final.
- Duke held North Carolina to its fewest shots and penalty corners all season at 10 and three, respectively.
Â
What Gives?
- Duke and North Carolina feature two of the stingiest defenses in the country. UNC sits at No. 1 (0.50 GAA) and the Blue Devils are right behind at No. 2 (0.56 GAA). Can North Carolina's offense continue its stellar play against the stalwart Duke defensive unit.
- Offensively, the Blue Devils have found their scoring touch of late, registering 13 goals in the past six games after notching just four in a span of six contests earlier in the season. Duke is the lone team this season to score more than one goal on the Tar Heels.
