CARY, N.C. – The top-ranked Duke women's soccer team had its season come to an end Friday evening in the semifinals of the NCAA College Cup with a 3-0 loss to second-seeded North Carolina at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary.
Blue Devil (18-3-1) head coach
Robbie Church saw his impressive career at Duke come to an conclusion with his fourth NCAA College Cup appearance. He finished with a 311-150-67 ledger at Duke and a 398-199-78 career as a women's head coach. The 2024 ACC Coach of the Year finished with a 46-19-10 ledger in 21 NCAA Tournament appearances as a head women's coach.
How It Happened
- After North Carolina attempted the first two shots of the match, Duke fouled the Tar Heels in the box in the 10th minute and were awarded a penalty kick.Kate Faasse stepped up and finished inside the right post at the 9:25 mark to give UNC a 1-0 lead.
- Duke started to mount an attack of its own attempting the next five shots, but couldn't get anything past the Tar Heel defense.
- North Carolina went ahead, 2-0, at the 23:55 mark as Olivia Thomas got past the Blue Devil defense and finished a one-v-one with Duke goalkeeper Leah Freeman.
- The Blue Devils nearly got a goal back at the 26:16 mark as junior Carina Lageyre blasted a right-footed shot that went off the right post and was cleared away.
- Duke featured six shots over the final 3:02 of the first half, but none crossed the line.
- At the end of the first 45 minutes, the Blue Devils held a 13-8 shot advantage with Mia Oliaro, Katie Groff and Mary Long leading with two each.
- North Carolina made it 3-0 in the 59th minute as Faasse found Maddie Dahlien at the penalty kick spot, took a couple of touches and finished inside the left post.
- Neither team had many shot attempts in the second half with junior Devin Lynch taking the first two for Duke in the 51st and 76th minutes.
- Duke concluded the match with a 17-9 shot advantage, but only five of those were on goal.
Notes
- Duke finished the season with school records in points (215), goals (68) and assists (79).
- The goal in the first half by North Carolina was only the sixth allowed by Duke in the first half all season and it was the earliest an opponent has scored on the Blue Devils.
- It marked only the fifth opponent out of 22 contests that Duke has trailed this season.
- Duke allowed two goals in the first half for only the second time this season (Notre Dame).
- The Blue Devils trailed at the end of the first half for only the third time this season (Notre Dame, California).
- Duke had not allowed a goal in the NCAA Tournament over the first four matches.
- The Blue Devils fell to 3-1-1 in the NCAA College Cup semifinals.
- The three goals allowed matched a season high.
- Duke was shutout for only the second time this season – which was the season opener at Ohio State.
- The Blue Devils finished the season with a 12-win turnaround from the season before, which was tied for the best in the nation.
