Doubles Duo of An/Yu Advance to ITA Regionals Semifinals

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Duke women's tennis team concluded action Monday at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Carolina Regional Championships with the doubles duo of Claire An and Eleana Yu advancing to the semifinals at the Chewning Tennis Center in Chapel Hill.
In the opening round of play, An/Yu defeated UNC Greensboro's Sophia Cedeno/Lauren Thomson, 8-3, and then in the round of 32 posted an 8-1 win over Emma Shasteen/Arli Boshoff of Gardner-Webb. In the Round of 16, the Blue Devils notched an impressive, 8-3, win over 33rd-ranked Tatum Evans and Theadora Rabman of North Carolina. An and Yu then collected an 8-7 win over Ni Xi and Sara Suchankova of UNC Charlotte in the quarterfinals, before falling, 6-0, 6-1, in the semifinals to Anna Bella Bianca Bergqvist Larsson and Kaitlyn Carnicella of South Carolina.
Two other Duke doubles tandems advanced to the Round of 16, before falling this week. Liv Hovde and Shavit Kimchi along with Katie Codd and Ava Krug won a pair of matches.
In singles action, both Hovde and Kimchi advanced to the Round of 16. Hovde totaled a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 win over Shona Nakano of UNC Charlotte and a 6-3, 6-2 win over Cedeno of UNC Greensboro. She dropped a 1-6, 4-6 decision against NC State's No. 88 Lavinia Tanasie to conclude her run. Kimchi totaled a 6-1, 6-2 win over Hayley Glen of Campbell and a 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) victory against Daniela Piani of South Carolina, before falling, 3-6, 6-3, 1-6 to Amelie Smejkalova of Clemson.
After dropping her round of 64 match in a tight one to Eva Oxford of Wake Forest, An had a run to the singles consolation final. She defeated Randy Rakotoarilala of NC A&T, 6-2, 6-1, and Elle Warren of Furman, 7-5, 6-0, in the Round of 32 and Round of 16. She then advanced to the finals as three opponents withdrew due to injury.
The trio of Krug, Yu and Codd won their first round singles matches, but fell in the round of 32.
Next up for the Blue Devils will be the ITA Conference Masters (Nov. 6-9) and the ITA Sectional Championship (Nov. 6-9).
