LYNCHBURG, Va. – The duo of Toby Fournier and Ashlon Jackson combined for 34 points, nine rebounds and seven assists to lead 15th-ranked Duke past Liberty, 71-57, in women's non-conference basketball action Sunday afternoon at Liberty Arena.
The win is the 100th career victory for Duke head coach Kara Lawson. She moves to 100-43 in her six years at the helm.
Fournier led the Blue Devils with 18 points, while Jackson had 16 points, four rebounds and five assists. Delaney Thomas added 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting and Taina Mair was her steady self with eight points, seven assists, three steals and zero turnovers. Anna Wikstrom came off the bench, playing an important 15 minutes and contributing five points and an assist.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Duke forced Liberty into four turnovers on its first four possessions, but the Blue Devils couldn't capitalize as both teams got off to a slow start offensively.
- Fournier scored the opening basket on a fastbreak layup, getting the assist from Mair. Jadyn Donovan followed with a reverse layup as Duke's defense continued to suffocate the Flames.
- The Blue Devils forced Liberty into eight turnovers in the opening 5:07 and kept the Flames off the board for 5:32.
- Ashlon Jackson had the hot hand coming out of the media timeout, draining consecutive threes to put Duke up eight, 10-2.
- Liberty went on a 7-0 run to pull within one before Duke answered with a 9-4 spurt to take a 19-13 lead after the first quarter. Jackson got things started with another three and Wikstrom capped the quarter with a drive and finish through the lane as the buzzer sounded.
- Duke forced Liberty into 10 turnovers in the opening 10 minutes.
- The Blue Devils and Flames traded baskets to start the second quarter with Liberty trailing by six, 27-21, 4:10 into the period. Keyed by a Mair three-pointer, the Blue Devils scored eight unanswered for their largest lead of the game, 35-21.
- Duke finished the quarter shooting 56 percent from the floor while holding Liberty to 33 percent and forcing seven more turnovers for a 41-27 lead at halftime.
- The Flames came out hot in the third quarter, scoring the first eight points of the frame to pull within six. Arianna Roberson ended Duke's 4:35 scoring drought, jumpstarting a 14-3 run. Roberson bookended the stretch with the first trifecta of her career and a 55-38 lead with 2:20 left in the third quarter. Roberson finished her day with nine points and 11 boards, just missing a double-double.
- Liberty closed the third stanza with six unanswered to make it an 11-point game with 10 minutes left to play.
- The Flames cut Duke's lead to single digits early in the fourth quarter but could never get any closer as Fournier and Thomas pushed the Blue Devils to the finish line with eight and six points, respectively, in the period.
- Emmy Stout paced Liberty with a game-high 21 points. The Flames finished with 25 turnovers – a season-high for a Duke opponent this season.
