ORLANDO, Fla. – Duke women's tennis had its run come to an end Thursday at the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championship, which was contested at the United States Tennis Association (USTA) National Campus in Orlando.
Irina Balus, who is ranked No. 14 nationally, concluded action in the round of 16 as she dropped a 4-6, 1-6 decision to 103rd-ranked Kyoka Kubo of Kansas. A product of Banská Bystrica, Slovakia, Balus was even, 3-3, in the first set, but Kubo won two games in a row to take a 5-3 lead. Balus won the next game to move the score to 5-4 and would drop the next to fall, 6-4.
In the second set, Balus fell behind 4-0. Balus broke Kubo to get on the board, 4-1, but Kobo won the final two games to take the match, 6-1.
Duke's
Liv Hovde and
Shavit Kimchi faced Vanderbilt's fourth-seeded and 12th-ranked Sophia Webster and Celia-Belle Mohr Thursday in the round of 16 of doubles action. Hovde and Kimchi had a terrific start opening with a 3-0 lead and won the first set, 6-1. Vanderbilt turned the table in the second set and jumped out to a 3-0 lead and held a 4-1 advantage. The Blue Devils tried to make a rally, but dropped the second set, 6-3.
In the third set tiebreaker, Vanderbilt posted a 10-8 victory to win the match.
Duke will now turn its attention to the 2026 team season, which opens Jan. 19 versus Iowa and NCCU inside Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.
