HOW IT HAPPENED
- Holy Cross had the hot hand in the early going, draining a pair of threes on its first three possessions for a 6-2 advantage after three minutes of play.
- Wood responded for the Blue Devils with consecutive three-point plays. The junior forward got an and-one and then dropped in a trifecta on the next possession to give Duke its first lead of the game, 8-6.
- Duke stretched the lead to four, 10-6, before Holy Cross answered with back-to-back threes for a 12-10 edge heading into the first timeout of the afternoon.
- The Blue Devils closed the quarter with a 7-0 run, keeping the Crusaders off the board for the final 4:01. Redshirt sophomore Riley Nelson keyed the run with five points – two from the charity stripe and a three.
- The momentum stayed with Duke to start the second period as Wood knocked down two more three-pointers and Fournier sank two free throws to extend the lead to 25-12.
- Duke's defense continued to suffocate Holy Cross, holding the Crusaders without a point for a span of 8:23 and without a field goal for 11:31. The Blue Devils outscored Holy Cross 29-1 over that stretch to head into the locker room up, 45-16.
- The Blue Devils held Holy Cross to just 6.7 percent shooting in the second quarter, while knocking down 53 percent of their shots on the offensive end.
- Duke's offense was firing on all cylinders in the third quarter and running through Fournier. The sophomore had 13 straight points as the Blue Devils' lead stayed at 29, 58-29, at the three-minute mark.
- Nelson capped the third with layup as time expired to send the Blue Devils into the fourth quarter with a 33-point lead, 68-35. Duke shot 73 percent in the third stanza and constricted Holy Cross to a 42.9 percentage.
- Holy Cross opened the final period converting a layup, but the Blue Devils pushed their edge out to 84-37, seeing 11 points from senior Ashlon Jackson. The Crusaders momentarily halted Duke's momentum with back-to-back points from beyond the arc. However, Duke went on a 6-0 spurt, extending its lead to 90-43 with 2:25 left to play. Holy Cross scored five more points, and Thomas converted a free throw to round out the Blue Devils' home-opener triumph, 91-48.
