DURHAM, N.C. – No. 20 Duke (35-16, 16-12 ACC) had the tying and go-ahead runners on base in the bottom of the ninth inning but were unable to scratch a run across the plate, as Georgia Tech (38-15, 18-10 ACC) defeated the Blue Devils 7-6 on Thursday evening.
Georgia Tech opened the scoring in the top of the first inning, hitting a two-run home run to left center field, 2-0. The Blue Devils responded in the bottom of the frame, as
Jake Hyde drew a bases-loaded walk to score
Wallace Clark, before
Tyler Albright reached on a fielder's choice to score Clark from third, 2-2.
Junior left-hander
Owen Proksch settled in on the mound, working six innings and allowing three runs on seven hits. He did not issue a walk and punched out six Yellow Jackets.
Duke took the lead for the first time on Thursday in the bottom of the second inning, as
Jake Berger hit a two-run home run to left center field, 4-2. In the top of the seventh inning, Georgia Tech plated five runs to take a 7-4 lead.
The Blue Devils never blinked, as a pitch hit
Ben Miller in the bottom of the eighth inning to score Berger from third, and Clark scored on a wild pitch, 7-6. Sophomore
Sam Harris led of the ninth with a double to the gap in left, before
Macon Winslow singled up the middle to put runners on the corners. Georgia Tech was able to wiggle out of trouble to take game one.

- In the bottom of the second inning, Jake Berger hit a two-run home run to left center field, 4-2.
- The Yellow Jackets took the lead in the top of the seventh inning, 7-4.
- In the bottom of the eighth inning, Ben Miller was hit by a pitch to score Berger from third. Clark scored from third on a wild pitch, 7-6.
NOTES
- Graduate Jake Hyde had his 17-game hitting streak snapped on Thursday evening, finishing the day 0-for-3 with a pair of walks.
- Graduate Jake Berger finished the evening 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI. Berger crushed his sixth home run of the season, a two-run shot to give Duke the lead in the bottom of the second inning.
- Graduate Ben Miller collected a 3-for-3 line at the plate, driving in a RBI on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch and drawing two walks. Miller was one of two Blue Devils to record multiple hits on Thursday.
- Junior left-hander Owen Proksch worked six innings on the mound, allowing three runs on seven hits. He did not issue a walk against the Yellow Jackets and punched out six of the 24 batters he faced.
- Graduate Mark Hindy tossed two scoreless frames for the Blue Devils in relief, allowing one hit and striking out three batters.
