McVeigh Lands Preseason Honor; Duke Picked Second

CHARLOTTE, N.C. β Duke senior Alaina McVeigh has been selected to the Preseason All-ACC Field Hockey Team in a vote of the league's nine coaches. The Blue Devils were picked to finish second in the standings behind preseason favorite North Carolina.
The Tar Heels topped the ballot with six first-place votes and 77 points. Duke was right behind them with two first-place nods and 67 points. Virginia rounds out the top three with 63 points.
North Carolina led all schools with three players named to the Preseason All-ACC team, while Virginia had two. Eight of the nine schools were represented on the 11-player team.
A two-time All-American, McVeigh returns to Duke's lineup after leading the Blue Devils in scoring for the past two seasons. She has 30 goals and five assists in her two seasons on the turf to rank 26th in program history with 65 points. Her 30 goals are 20th all-time at Duke as she remains on pace to become the school's 13th 40-goal scorer and 13th 100-point scorer.
McVeigh, along with sophomore Madison Beach and senior Macy Szukics, has spent the past week with the U.S. U21 National Team at the Junior Pan American Games. In four games, the native of Landsdale, Pennsylvania has 11 goals, including both in the semifinal win over Uruguay. The U.S. takes on Argentina in the gold medal game, Aug. 19 at 6:45 p.m. (ET).
The Blue Devils officially open the 2025 season Aug. 29 against Liberty. The first hit is set for 4 p.m., on Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium.
