DURHAM, N.C.—Duke freshman
Sofia Fidalgo Schioppa scored with 4:43 left in the fourth quarter to complete the comeback for the ninth-ranked Blue Devils in a 2-1 victory over No. 19 Louisville in ACC field hockey action Friday evening.
Rookie
Shae Wozniak provided the Blue Devils (8-4, 3-2) with the tying goal in the third quarter – the first of her young Duke career. It was Duke's first come-from-behind victory of the season.
Duke's defense was stellar once again, holding the Cardinals to two shots and one penalty corner for the game.
How it Happened
- The first half was an even affair on the stat line with Duke holding a 3-1 edge in shots. The Blue Devils held much of the possession but couldn't find that final pass inside the circle.
- The Blue Devils held Louisville without a shot in the first quarter and to just one in the second 15 minutes. Duke goaltender Kaiya Chepow kicked away the shot on goal by the Cardinals to send both teams into the locker rooms scoreless.
- Louisville broke the scoreless tie in the 35th minute as Rylie Wollerton collected a fabulous pass from Gigi Edwards and turned on her Blue Devil defender to finish a backhanded shot into the roof of the goal.
- Duke responded well as the Blue Devils picked up its intensity in the ensuing minutes. They earned a penalty corner in the 37th minute with Julia Boehringer sliding a shot wide left of the cage.
- The possession remained heavily in Duke's favor over the next few minutes as Kyle Massey drew a foul outside the circle for a penalty corner. Alaina McVeigh provided the insert for a Macy Szukics sweep. Wozniak ran in from the left side of the circle and got her stick down perfectly to redirect Szukics' hit past Louisville goalie Emily Young.
- Knotted at one apiece after 45 minutes of action, Duke kept the clamps on the Louisville offense. The Blue Devils took advantage of the player advantage due to a Louisville green card late in the game as Madison Beach carried the ball into the circle and slid a pass from the baseline to Schioppa in the middle of the circle. The rookie midfielder placed her shot perfectly inside the far post for the 2-1 advantage in the 56th minute.
- Duke finished out the final 4:43 of the game superbly, preventing any Louisville circle entries. Chepow finished the game with one save while Young had two for Louisville.
- The Blue Devils held a 7-2 edge in shots and 4-1 advantage in penalty corners.

Quotes
Pam Bustin on Duke's defense
"Honestly, just them putting in the work. Putting in the work video wise. Putting in the work on the field. Talking to one another and being really open to figuring out solutions as a group. It's the entire defensive team. It's from the front line to the goalkeeper that really makes our defense work."
