DURHAM – Former Duke men's lacrosse head coach Bruce Corrie passed earlier this year. He was 90 years old.
Born November 21, 1935, Corrie joined Duke University as a professor and coach in 1965. He became the men's lacrosse head coach in 1967 with Roy Skinner by his side. He and Skinner served as co-head coaches for four seasons (19767-70) before Corrie took over the helm from 1971-1975.
In nine seasons (1967-75), he guided Duke to a 52-62 record, including a program-best eight wins in 1972. During that time, Corrie obtained his Doctor of Physical Education in 1970 from Indiana University.
Following his time in Durham, Corrie went on to a lengthy career in college athletics. He moved into administration circle in 1978, becoming the athletic director at Bucknell University. He went on to serve as athletic director at Northwestern University (1987-93) and Robert Morris University (1994-2000). He was the chairperson of the Big Ten athletic directors in 1992-93 and received the All-American Football Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999. In 2011, he was inducted into the Robert Morris Athletic Hall of Fame.
Corrie, a 1957 graduate of Denison University, was a four-year letterwinner in men's lacrosse and a one-year letterman for men's soccer for the Big Red. He was inducted into his alma mater's Hall of Fame in 2004.
