DURHAM, N.C. – Duke volleyball took the opening set on Friday night but fell to Georgia Tech, 3-1 (23-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-17), in its ACC home opener inside Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Duke (9-4, 1-2 ACC) got off to a great start and won the opening set but couldn't slow down the high-powered Georgia Tech (11-3, 3-0 ACC) offense, who finished the night hitting .302.
The Blue Devils got another strong night from
Ashby Zubchevich, who led all players with 17 kills on a .303 hitting percentage. Duke also got 15 kills from
Nataly Moravec. As a team, Duke finished the night hitting .198.
Nikki Quinn had 40 assists.
Zoe Gillen-Malveux led the Blue Devils with six blocks, as the team finished with 10.
Mailinh Godschall led Duke with 10 digs.
The Yellow Jackets had five players record double-digit kills and got a team-high 14 from Bianca Garibaldi.
How it Happened
Set 1: Duke 25, Georgia Tech 23
- The Blue Devils got off to a strong start and the two teams were tied through the first 16 points of the match. Georgia Tech found some rhythm and pushed its lead to 13-10. The Blue Devils got close going into the media timeout, trailing 15-14.
- Down 20-18, Duke was able to even it up at 23-23. Thanks to a kill by Gillen-Malveaux and a block by Charlotte Glass and Breonna Goss, the Blue Devils clinched the opening set of the night.
- Duke hit .378 in the frame and were led by seven kills on seven attempts by Zubchevich. Moravec also tallied six kills.
Set 2: Georgia Tech 25, Duke 19
- The Yellow Jackets started fast, jumping ahead 8-4 and forced a Duke timeout. The Blue Devils were unable to narrow the gap going into the media timeout and trailed 15-8.
- The Blue Devils couldn't get the set closer than four, and the Yellow Jackets evened the match up on a kill by Garibaldi.
- Duke hit .069 in the set and recorded just six kills.
Set 3: Georgia Tech 25, Duke 20
- Duke jumped ahead early, leading 4-0 and forced Georgia Tech into a timeout. The Blue Devils pushed its lead to 7-2 before the Yellow Jackets went on a 10-2 run to take a 12-9 lead.
- Thanks to a service error by Georgia Tech, Duke was able to get within two late – 22-20 – but the Yellow Jackets won the next three points to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
- Duke hit .273 in the frame but couldn't contain Georgia Tech, who hit .320. Moravec had four kills to lead the Blue Devils.
Set 4: Georgia Tech 25, Duke 17
- Duke had things even through the opening 14 points before Georgia Tech started to pull away, leading 15-10 at the media timeout.
- The Blue Devils were unable to get it closer than six the rest of the way, with Georgia Tech clinching the match on a block.
- Duke hit .079 in the frame, with three players recording three kills each. The Yellow Jackets sat at .242 in the set.
By the Numbers
- Georgia Tech led in kills with 60, while Duke had 45. The Yellow Jackets finished the night with 57 assists compared to the Blue Devils' 44.
- On defense, Georgia Tech had 48 digs while Duke had 39. The Blue Devils won the blocking battle 10-8.
- Duke had five service aces, while Georgia Tech had seven.
