DURHAM, N.C. - Duke earned a pair of victories over Maine on Saturday, Feb. 14, as the Blue Devils swept the Saturday doubleheader to take three of four in the opening weekend series over the Black Bears. Duke won the first game, 3-0, withÂ
Andy Dean making the start for the seven-inning affair and throwing five impressive innings en route to his first win of the season.
Jack Hedrick earned the victory in the second game, pitching four innings of relief, as Duke took the nightcap, 7-1.Â
Adin Zorn highlighted Duke's offense in the first game, going 2-for-3 at the plate and tallying an RBI. In the second game,
Canon Cider was a perfect 3-for-3, while
Brooks Perez hit his first career home run, a two-run blast in the fifth inning.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED: GAME ONE
- After three scoreless innings, the Blue Devils struck in the bottom of the fourth as Cider Canon singled, Tyler Albright walked and Adin Zorn singled to lead the bases. Ben Patrone plated the first run of the contest with a sacrifice fly to right field to give Duke a 1-0 advantage. Michael DiMartini then singled in Albright to give Duke a 2-0 lead through four innings.
- Duke added a second run in the fifth as Jake Lambdin doubled to lead off the inning and then RJ Hamilton laid down a perfect bunt for a single to give the Blue Devils men on first and third. Zorn singled for the second inning in a row to score Lambdin and Duke led, 3-0. Â
- On the mound for the Blue Devils, Ben Dean was impressive throwing five innings and allowing only one hit and striking out nine batters for the win.
- Aiden O'Connell came in relief for Duke and pitched two scoreless innings for the save with three strikeouts.
- Duke freshman Brooks Perez registered his first collegiate hit in the third inning.
HOW IT HAPPENED: GAME TWO
- Duke started the scoring in the first inning, with a double steal, as Cider Canon came home after Tyler Albright started the sequence with a swipe of second.Â
- Maine used an RBI groundout in the second inning to log its lone run of the evening.
- The Blue Devils posted two runs in the bottom of the second, taking advantage of a hit by pitch and a balk to cross the plate twice in the frame.
- Canon continued his strong day at the plate in the bottom of the fourth, with an RBI single up the middle, scoring Jake Lambdin.
- Brooks Perez went yard for the first time in his career in the bottom of the fifth, as the freshman sent the ball 412 feet to right field for a two-run home run.
- A fielder's choice in the bottom of the sixth scored RJ Hamilton, wrapping up the seven Duke runs scored in the evening portion of the doubleheader.
- Andy Leon earned the start for Duke in the second game, pitching three innings, with only two hits and one walk, while striking out two.
- Jack Hedrick followed Leon and threw four strong innings, allowing just one hit across 16 batters, while punching out five.
