ELON, N.C. – No. 20 Duke (8-3) scored runs in all five innings to roll past Elon (1-8) in a 13-1 run-rule victory Tuesday night at Hunt Softball Park.
The Blue Devils' full pitching staff of freshman
Ava Bradshaw, sophomore
Mallory Wheeler, senior
Cassidy Curd and junior
Larissa Jacquez saw action in the circle, limiting the Phoenix to just two hits during the contest. Curd secured the win after tossing 2.0 innings of relief and collecting a pair of strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Senior D'Auna Jennings sparked the offense immediately, sending a leadoff base hit through the left side. Classmate Aminah Vega followed suit with single up the middle and advanced to second on the throw. The duo came home on a sacrifice fly from graduate student Tyrina Jones to take an early 2-0 lead.
- Duke's offense continued to put pressure on Elon's defense, plating five runs off four hits in the bottom of the second to stretch it to 7-0. The frame was highlighted by Vega's three-RBI double off the left center field wall.
- In the top of the third, the Blue Devils used an RBI-single from redshirt junior Jessica Oakland, freshman Gabriella Shadek's groundout to shortstop and a wild pitch to add three more runs and create a 10-0 gap between the teams.
- Freshmen Jayla Stafford and Adelyn Matthews made it a 12-0 game in the fourth after scoring on a wild pitch and ground out, respectively. Stafford opened the inning with a double to right center field and advanced to third on Jennings' single to center. Matthews, pinch running for Jennings, stole second and reached third on a wild pitch.
- Sophomore Layla Lamar slipped a one-out single past Elon's infield before stealing second to move herself into scoring position. She took advantage of a Phoenix error in the top of the fifth to round out Duke's 13 runs.
- Elon pushed its lone run across the plate in the bottom half of the frame, using a groundout to shortstop.
