CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif – No. 20 Duke battled two nationally-ranked teams on the second day of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Cathedral City, Calif., but ultimately came up short, falling to No. 5 Oklahoma, 11-1, and No. 9 UCLA, 10-5, Friday.
The Blue Devils fall to 9-6 on the season while the Sooners improve to 11-1 and the Bruins move to 10-3 overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED VS. NO.5 OKLAHOMA
- The Sooners came out swinging, posting a five-run frame in the bottom of the first to quickly jump ahead.
- The Blue Devils broke through with their lone run in the top of the fourth after sophomore Layla Lamar sent a double down the right field line to bring in senior Aminah Vega from second.
- Oklahoma kept the pressure on offense, adding an additional run in the home half to create a 6-1 gap.
- In the bottom of the sixth, Oklahoma used a double, walk and single up the middle loaded the bases. An infield single added another run for the Sooners before Nelly McEnroe-Marinas launched a grand slam to left field to complete the run-rule victory, 11-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED VS. NO. 9 UCLA
- Duke struck first in game two using a groundout from graduate student Tyrina Jones and Lamar's two-out RBI-single to plate a pair of runs in the top of the first.
- The Bruins answered immediately in the bottom half, taking advantage of a Blue Devil error to cut the lead to 2-1.
- A hit by pitch and pair of walks loaded the bases for the Bruins in the bottom of the second. UCLA's Megan Grant drove in one a sacrifice fly to right field before Jordan Woolery followed with a three-run shot to left to pull in front, 5-2.
- The next two frames went scoreless as senior pitcher Cassidy Curd and Taylor Tinsley of UCLA combined to allow just two to move into scoring position. The Bruins' offense then erupted in the bottom of the fifth with three runs off two hits and an error to stretch the gap to 8-2.
- Duke clawed back in the top of the sixth, using RBI-doubles by Jones and Lamar and senior KK Mathis reaching on a Bruins' throwing error to score three and cut UCLA's advantage to 8-5.
- The Bruins added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to extend their edge, 10-5.
- Duke battled until its final out, placing runners on the corners in the top of the seventh but were unable to push any additional runs across the plate.
NOTES
- Jones and Lamar each tallied two RBI during game two, their sixth and fourth multi-RBI performances of the season, respectively.
- Sophomore Mallory Wheeler and junior Larissa Jacquez split the circle versus the Sooners. Wheeler earned her fourth start while Jacquez made her 10th appearance of the year.
- Curd worked all 6.0 innings against the Bruins, her third complete game of the season and 21st of her career.
- She fanned six in the nightcap, raising her season total to a team-high 28 strikeouts.
- Despite the loss, Duke outhit UCLA 9-8, marking its 10th game this season with 9-plus hits.
