DURHAM, N.C. – Duke senior
Ashlon Jackson and
Taina Mair turned in a pair of outstanding all-around efforts to lead the 12th-ranked Blue Devils to their 13th ACC women's basketball regular season title Thursday night with an 80-52 victory over Florida State inside Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Duke (21-7, 16-1) garnered at least a share of the regular season crown and the top seed in the upcoming ACC Championship with the victory. Mair finished her night with 10 points, 11 rebounds, eight assists and four steals, while Jackson had 15 points, four rebounds and two assists. Florida State falls to 9-20 overall and 4-13 in the ACC.
Sophomore
Toby Fournier and junior
Delaney Thomas also registered double-doubles with 22 points and 13 rebounds and 13 points and 20 rebounds, respectively.
Riley Nelson rounded out the double-digit scorers with 13 points to go with six assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Duke and Florida State traded baskets throughout the first five minutes with the Seminoles finding ways to score to take a 14-11 lead into the first media timeout with 4:01 left on the clock.
- The Blue Devils dominated the boards in the first five minutes, 8-4, but 60-percent shooting by Florida State proved to be the difference for the three-point edge.
- Florida State extended its lead to five, 16-11, before the Blue Devils rattled off six straight points to take a 17-16 lead.
- The Seminoles scored the quarter's final four points to take a 20-17 lead into the first break.
- Fournier (9) and Thomas (6) combined for15 of Duke's 17 points in the first quarter.
- Thomas and Fournier continued to carry the scoring load for the Blue Devils in the early minutes of the second quarter to push Duke back in front, 21-20.
- Duke struggled to find its shooting touch through the first five minutes of the second period, going 1-of-9. After Florida State surged ahead by one, Duke answered with a pair of corner threes from Fournier and Jackson for the 27-22 lead at the timeout. Jackson, after starting the game 0-of-6 from distance, hit 2-of-3 looks in the second quarter to give Duke the 32-25 lead.
- Florida State outscored Duke, 4-1, in the final 60 seconds of the opening half to cut the Blue Devils' advantage to four, 33-29, at the half.
- Duke came out fast in the third quarter, going on a 7-0 run to race ahead by 11, 40-29, and forced Florida State into a timeout. The Blue Devils found their rhythm on both ends of the court en route to extending the lead to 18, 51-33.
- Offensively, the Blue Devils spread out the scoring with six different players putting up points. At the defensive end, Duke held the Seminoles to just 28.6 percent and forced five turnovers to head into the final period with a 55-40 lead. Mair did a little bit of everything for Duke in the third, registering five points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
- Duke kept its foot on the gas pedal in the fourth quarter, using a 16-2 run to stretch the lead to 28 points, 74-46. The Blue Devils, behind 10 fourth-quarter points from Nelson, outscored the Seminoles 25-12 in the final 10 minutes for the 80-52 victory.
- Jasmin Shavers led all Seminoles with 21 points, while Tatum Greene had a team-high eight rebounds.
