DURHAM, N.C. – A stellar complete game performance from senior pitcher
Cassidy Curd helped guide Duke (11-9) to a 3-1 victory over Ohio State (6-11) in the final game of the Duke Invitational Sunday afternoon at Smith Family Stadium.
Curd worked her second 7.0 inning outing of the weekend, allowing just one run off three hits. The lefty fanned a season-high 10 batters and did not allow a baserunner to reach scoring position until surrendering a solo home run in the top of the sixth.
The Blue Devil duo of graduate student
Tyrina Jones and senior
Aminah Vega paced the offense, finishing 2-for-3 at the plate. Jones drove in one of Duke's three runs with an RBI-single to score Vega in the bottom of the first.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Blue Devils took the lead in the opening frame as senior D'Auna Jennings reached on a hit by pitch, advanced to third on Vega's base hit to right field and scored on a wild pitch. Jones laced a single through the left side to score Vega two batters later and put Duke ahead, 2-0.
- Curd continued to control the game from inside the circle, not allowing a single baserunner over the following four frames while collecting eight strikeouts.
- The Buckeyes posted their lone run in the top of the sixth using a solo homer from Abbie Wilhelm to pull within one.
- Senior KK Mathis, pinch hitting for redshirt junior Kairi Rodriguez, extended the Blue Devils' lead back to two with a home run in the bottom of the sixth.
- Curd put the game away in the top of the seventh using a pair of groundouts and her 10th strikeout of the game to seal the 3-1 victory.
NOTES
