DURHAM, N.C. – The Blue Devils defeated No. 11 Virginia Tech, 5-2, Saturday afternoon at Smith Family Stadium to clinch their second ACC series victory of the season. Â
Duke improves to 18-9 overall and remains unbeaten in league play at 5-0, while the Hokies fall to 22-4 and 0-2 in conference action.
Redshirt freshman
Ava Bradshaw was credited with the win in the circle, tossing 4.0 scoreless innings of relief. The South Lyon, Michigan, native scattered five hits and allowed two walks with one strikeout. She moves her ledger to 3-1 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Senior D'Auna Jennings jumpstarted the offense in the opening frame with a leadoff double before coming around on classmate Aminah Vega's base hit to right. Graduate student Tyrina Jones then slipped an RBI-single down the first base line to plate Vega, and freshman Jayla Stafford added to the lead with a sacrifice fly to score sophomore Layla Lamar, who drew a one-out walk. Redshirt junior Kairi Rodriguez capped the inning with a double to left to bring in Jones and create a 4-0 gap.
- The Hokies answered in the top of the second with a two-RBI single from Haley Luginbill to cut the gap to 4-2.
- Jennings pushed Duke ahead again, 5-2, in the bottom of the fourth, dropping a base hit into shallow center field. Her knock scored freshman Ariel Krueger, who was pinch running for Rodrigeuz after she opened the frame with her second double of the contest.
- The visitors threatened a comeback in the top of the seventh, using a single up the middle and a pair of walks to load the bases on two outs. However, the Blue Devils secured the final out on a groundout to second base to leave the game-tying run stranded.
NOTES
- Sophomore Mallory Wheeler earned her sixth start of the season Saturday. Wheeler worked the first 3.0 innings, allowing two runs off four hits with a pair of walks.  Â
- Bradshaw made her ninth appearance in the circle and first since Feb. 24 versus East Carolina.
- Rodriguez and Jennings paced the offense against the Hokies, batting 2-for-3 and 2-for-4, respectively.
- Rodriguez tallied her third multi-hit outing of the season while Jennings recorded her 17th.
- The Blue Devils secured their third straight series victory over the Hokies and have won eight of the last nine matchups.
