DURHAM, N.C. – Duke fell to No. 11 Virginia Tech, 10-2, Sunday evening at Smith Family Stadium, as the Hokies used an eight-run fifth inning to pull away in the series finale.
The Blue Devils moved to 18-10 overall and 5-1 in ACC action, while the Hokies improved to 23-4 on the season and a 1-2 mark in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a scoreless first inning, the Hokies struck connected a double, a walk and a base hit into left field to plate the first run of the game in the top of the second.
- The Blue Devils responded immediately in the home half as redshirt junior Kairi Rodriguez and freshman Jayla Stafford sparked a two-out rally with back-to-back singles to left field. Rodriguez capitalized on freshman Adelyn Matthews' infield single and a Hokies error to score from second, knotting the score at 1-1.
- Virginia Tech regained the lead in the top of the third with a solo home run from Jordan Lynch to right center field.
- Duke answered again in the fourth as senior KK Mathis drew a leadoff walk and freshman Ariel Krueger entered to pinch run. Krueger moved to third on a flyout to right field and a wild pitch before coming home on Matthews' sacrifice fly to center field to tie the score, 2-2, before entering a rain delay.
- After the game resumed, Virginia Tech's offense exploded for an eight-run fifth inning to pull away, 10-2.
- Sophomore Layla Lamar drew a two-out walk before moving herself into scoring position on a wild pitch, but Virginia Tech's Emma Mazzarone recorded the final strikeout to end the game in a five-inning run rule.
NOTES
- Redshirt freshman Ava Bradshaw made her fifth start of the season in the circle. She worked the first 1.1 innings, allowing one run off three hits.
- Junior Larissa Jacquez tossed 2.2 innings of relief and was ultimately tagged with the loss. She moves her season record to 3-4 overall.
- Sophomore Mallory Wheeler also saw action in the circle, making her 13th appearance of the season.
- The all-time series between Duke and Virginia Tech is now tied at 10-10. The Blue Devils have won eight of the last 10 meetings.
