QUICK HITS
- Duke plays its first home game since March 15 and its first midweek contest since March 3, hosting East Carolina on March 24. The Blue Devils and Pirates meet for the first of two times this season, with the two teams set to square off in Greenville on April 7.
- The Blue Devils claimed the lone meeting last season and have won each of the last three matchups. The Pirates are seeking their first win over Duke since a 5-4 victory on May 10, 2022.Â
- Duke took one of three on the road at Virginia Tech over the weekend, winning a thriller, 8-6 on Saturday. The Hokies took the series opener, 7-1, and won in 10 innings, 7-6, in the rubber match on Sunday. Matthew Strand highlighted Duke's win on Saturday, blasting a pair of two-run homers, starting in the seventh and then breaking a 6-6 tie in the top of the ninth. Strand has stepped into a bulk of the catching responsibilities since Cider Canon was announced out for a minimum of eight weeks on March 5.Â
- In the month of March, Strand has posted a 1.342 OPS in 11 games played. All six of his home runs, and 14 of his 16 RBI, have come this month. The transfer from Samford is slashing .395/.458/.884 since the calendar turned to March and he's a perfect 4-for-4 on stolen-base attempts as well.
- Kaden Smith increased his RBI total to 14 over the weekend. Smith posted an RBI double in Saturday's win and sent a 450-foot home run to left field in the first inning on Sunday. The transfer from Charleston Southern tallied a game-tying RBI single in the top of the ninth, with two outs and on a full count, capping Duke's late rally to send the contest to extra innings.
- Smith made his Duke debut against Princeton after missing the first 12 games of the season due to injury. Smith led all of Division I in runs batted in per game last season at Charleston Southern, with 79 across 50 games played (1.58)
- Duke outfielder Tyler Albright has already worked 33 walks this season, leading the country. The senior is nearly 75% of the way to his previous season-high of 45, set last year in 62 games. The senior outfielder moved to leadoff to open the Miami series, with Albright's patience at the plate and base-running ability cited by Duke head coach Corey Muscara for the shift in lineup.
- Shortstop Jake Lambdin moved into the three-hole with the lineup change and continues to grow more comfortable at the plate. The Xavier transfer is slashing .269/.395/.559, hit his fourth homer of the season at High Point last Tuesday, leads the team in doubles (12) and is 16-of-17 on the basepaths.
- Infielder Collin Anderson continues to make consistent starts this month, as the freshman slashes .294/.368/.559 in March. Working mainly at second base, Anderson hit his third homer of the season at High Point has logged back-to-back multi-RBI performances against Miami.Â
- The Blue Devils announced the hire of Mike Salvino as the program's general manager on Feb. 23. Salvino steps into the role with a goal of building championship teams while also mentoring student-athletes on how to grow their personal brands and prepare for professional careers beyond the game.Â
