BLACKSBURG, Va. — The Duke women's tennis team collected its 1,000th win in program history Sunday as the 24th-ranked Blue Devils totaled a 4-0 victory at Virginia Tech inside the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg.Â
Â
Duke became just the fourth program to reach 1,000 wins, joining Stanford, Florida and Georgia. The Blue Devils improved to 12-5 overall and 6-1 in ACC action on the year, while the Hokies dropped to 4-12, 1-7.Â
Â
How It Happened
- Due to Virginia Tech only having five available players for the match Sunday, the Hokies forfeited at No. 3 doubles.Â
- The Blue Devil duo of Liv Hovde and Aspen Schuman jumped out to a 3-1 lead on court two and eventually totaled a 6-3 victory against Mila Mulready and Linda Ziets-Segura to secure the doubles point.Â
- When the doubles point was clinched, Duke's Irina Balus and Shavit Kimchi were tied, 4-4, against 44th-ranked Arina Gamretkaia and Ozlem Uslu.Â
- The Hokies forfeited at No. 5 and No. 6 singles so the Blue Devils needed only one point in singles to clinch the victory.Â
- In singles action, Duke senior Katie Codd clinched the Duke victory with a 6-2, 6-0 win against Ziets-Segura. Codd, who hails from Carlsbad, California, jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first set before finishing with a 6-2 win. In the second set, Codd didn't drop a game, winning 6-0 on court four.Â
- When the match was clinched, Balus was in the third set against Uslu, 6-4, 2-6, 0-1, on court one, Schuman was trailing Gamretkaia, 4-6, 2-3, on court two and Claire An was leading Mila Mulready, 7-5, 3-1.Â
Â
Notes
- Katie Codd clinched the match for Duke for the third time this season and the eighth time over her career.Â
- Codd moved to 6-4 on the season in singles and 2-0 in ACC play.Â
- In doubles play, Duke's Liv Hovde and Aspen Schuman registered their first win together as Blue Devils.Â
- Duke is now 30-2 in the all-time series with Virginia Tech and won 10 in a row.Â

Quotes
- "Obviously, Virginia Tech was a little bit undermanned, but we came out in the doubles and did what we needed to do. And then Katie played a fairly quick match there at No. 4 singles to get us over the fourth point. So, it was a good day as a quick day, especially with the stretch we have coming up with matches on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, Wednesday, Friday, Sunday. It was good to have a relatively speedy match." – Duke head coach Jamie Ashworth
- "That's a lot of good players, we've had a lot of good people. It all goes back to 1972 I think when our program started and there's been so many quality individuals that have gone on to do many great things in their life. Hopefully everyone feels a little bit of pride and passion with that today, getting that mark. There's been so many people, coaches before me, assistant coaches, trainers and administrators that have been a part of the 1,000 wins so everyone that's had a hand in our program over the time I've been there and the time before, should be proud of that." – Duke head coach Jamie Ashworth on reaching 1,000 wins
Â
Next Match
- Duke will return home to host North Carolina Wednesday, April 1 with a 5 p.m., start inside Ambler Tennis Stadium.Â
