DURHAM, N.C. – Duke Director of Track & Field and Cross CountryÂ
Shawn Wilbourn announced Friday the hiring of
Abby Hassman as an assistant coach to the Blue Devils' staff. Hassman competed for the Blue Devils as a graduate student during the 2025-26 campaign and recently graduated with her master's in management studies this past May.

"We are pleased to welcome Abby to our staff," said Wilbourn. "As a recent graduate, she has a strong understanding of our culture and the goals of our cross country and distance programs. Abby demonstrated outstanding leadership as a student-athlete and we are confident she will carry those qualities into her role as a coach for Duke track & field and cross country."
Hassman competed at nine meets across the indoor and outdoor seasons in her lone season with the Blue Devils, picking up five top-10 placements. The Foxborough, Massachusetts, native aided Duke's distance medley relay squad to the gold medal at the 2026 ACC Indoor Championships, while also posting personal bests in the 3000 and 5000-meter events during the year.

"I couldn't be more excited to join the Duke cross country and track & field coaching staff to support this special group in a new role," said Hassman. "The team culture, commitment and growth have been amazing to witness firsthand over the past year. I'm so excited and grateful for the opportunity to help develop the next generation of Duke student-athletes!"
Prior to her time with at Duke, Hassman attended Northeastern University, where she enjoyed a highly-accomplished athletic career from 2021-25 and graduated with a bachelor's degree in health science and psychology. During her time with the Huskies, the harrier was a three-time Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) individual cross country champion, six-time CAA medalist in track and field, three-time CAA Cross Country Runner of the Year, three-time United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Northeast Region pick and four-time All-CAA honoree. Additionally, Hassman graduated as the school record holder in numerous events and was the first woman in Northeastern's history to qualify for the NCAA Cross Country Championships with her selection to the 2023 meet.

"I recruited her out of high school, watched her closely as she developed into an NCAA Championship qualifier at Northeastern, and most recently, I coached her to an ACC DMR championship at Duke as a graduate student. I am confident that she will provide our team with the leadership and skills to develop our program towards the top of the NCAA and provide an amazing overall student-athlete experience."
