DURHAM, N.C. – Following an impressive showing for the third-ranked Blue Devils in a 5-0 victory Sunday against No. 1 Stanford, Duke women's soccer junior Katie Shea Collins has been tabbed the TopDrawerSoccer National Player of the Week, as announced Tuesday.
A native of Gallatin, Tennessee, Collins came through with one of the best games of her collegiate career as she tallied one goal, two assists and earned a penalty kick in the second half. It marked the first five-goal loss by Stanford since Nov. 11, 2000, when the Cardinal lost on the road at BYU. The 5-0 result also tied the largest margin of defeat in program history.
Collins got things started at the 14:14 mark of the first half as she registered her sixth goal of the season to put Duke ahead, 1-0, off assists from Mia Oliaro and Sam Bodensteiner. In the 36th minute, Collins added an assist to give Duke a 2-0 lead as she set up Avery Oder with a perfect pass in the box.
After heading into the halftime break with a 2-0 lead, Collins assisted on Duke's third goal in the 52nd minute as rookie Yuna Marui scored her first collegiate tally. Leading 4-0, Collins took the ball into the left side of the box and drew a penalty kick, which Oder finished for her second goal of the match in the 79th minute.
Collins contributed to four of Duke's five goals on the day. She has now scored a goal in five games in a row and ranks second on the team with six tallies.
Duke's five goals were the most the Blue Devils have scored against a No. 1 team in program history. The Blue Devils notched their third all-time win against a top-ranked opponent and collected four or more goals against a top-10 team for the fifth time in Duke history.
Stanford entered Sunday's match allowing only two goals over the first seven contests.
Duke will return to action Thursday, Sept. 17, as the Blue Devils make the short trip down Tobacco Road to face seventh-ranked North Carolina. The match will start at 8 p.m., live on ACC Network.
